POINT

Installation Furniture

Delving into a speculative world, “Point” is a vehicle for Thomas’ exploration of form, function, and materiality through sculpture and furniture design. The exhibition blurs the boundaries between set design and world-building by bringing to life an imagined universe with rich and otherworldly aesthetic codes and unfamiliar objects, textures and scents that act as portals into new narratives.

The design of furniture pieces on display is rooted in the environment and the culture of the speculative world. The first group of objects - which includes the frameshift light, hide chair and fluid bench - draw their biomimetic forms from the surrounding terrain and nature, echoing forms of plant and animal life. Dolman table, Tenebrosity light and chair of state contrast their organic silhouettes and feature carefully considered structure

The pieces function primarily as storytelling devices As such, their design is liberated from the constraints of traditional production, and a joyful celebration of experimental craftsmanship. The rich context of the speculative universe is also reflected in the sculptural artefacts displayed - large-scale masks representing spiritual practices and ornamental incense holders that act as cultural relics. The incense was commissioned to transport us into an imagined landscape and build a visceral sensory experience, the smell of petrichor evoking images of rain falling on rocky terrain. We get a glimpse of these imposing geological forms through a series of physical miniatures and a 3D visualisation of the environment, which add a cinematic scale to this speculative universe.
Capturing a freeze-frame of life elsewhere, Thomas examines this single point in space and time in vivid and sensory detail. As he peers through portals into this world, the exhibition asks you to do the same.
